Top Ten Bassists of Christian Metal

Mace Beard
 07/21/2016 04:33PM

So today, we're continuing the Top Ten lists. This list is going to feature many amazing Bass players, that may not be looked at as phenomenons. Check these guys out!

10. Chris Truby (Living Sacrifice)

Chris Truby joined Living Sacrifice in 1995, right after Vocalist/Bassist DJ Johnson left the band. Truby was only featured on LS' Reborn album, but it doesn't matter. Reborn was LS' rebirth. (See what I did there) Truby left LS in 1998, with his brother Jason, who would later go on to join P.O.D.

9. Steve Rowe (Mortification, Wonrowe Vision)

Steve Rowe started Mortification as the power metal band, LightForce in 1987. LightForce changed their name to Mortification in 1989 with the new lineup of Drummer Jayson Sherlock and Guitarist Michael Carlisle. Rowe is phenomenal bass player! Especially on the early Mortification releases (Mortification, Scrolls of the Megalloth, Post Momentary Affliction). Go listen to "Terminate Damnation" and tell me that's not awesome! Rowe is still in Mortification and in Wonrowe Vision, which I don't know a whole lot about.

8. Derek Kosiba (As They Sleep)

Derek Kosiba of As They Sleep is a killer bassist! Kosiba joined the band in 2003, a few months after they formed. He is still in the band, like all the members, minus Drummer Paul Burkett who left after releasing Blacken the Sun. Kosiba's bass playing is killer! Check out "The Third Reich" for both the drums and bass.

As They Sleep (2003)

Blacken the Sun (2008)

Dynasty (2010)

TBA (2016)

7. Ekard Van Tonder (Forfeit Thee Untrue)

Ekard Van Tonder has been in the band since 2013 and killed it on the band's debut album Cremationem Jesus Lacrimam! There's a bass solo somewhere in this album, which song I don't remember, but still awesome! Forfeit Thee Untrue released their album on April 1, 2016. Can't wait for some more material!

Blood Soaked Splinter (2013)

Cremationem Jesus Lacrimam (2016)

6. Josh Mathes (Broken Flesh)

Josh Mathes is a wicked player! Mathes joined Broken Flesh in 2013, after being hired by his brother Jacob. He recorded on Warbound (2013) and Broken Flesh (2015) before leaving. Mathes left with his brother at Serpent Stomp Festival on April 26, 2016, with bands like Death Therapy, Living Sacrifice and Every Knee Shall Bow. Mathes was replaced by Kyle Fitzgerald who is currently (as of 2016) the band's Bassist.

Warbound (2013)

Broken Flesh (2015)

5. Max "Mormegil" Tubville (Abated Mass of Flesh, O, Majestic Winter)

Max "Mormegil" Tubville is the current Bassist for Abated Mass of Flesh. The band's music is primarily down tuned guitars, so the bass pops in the mix a lot. I can tell that Tubville is a talented Bass player, but he also does sings in some of his other bands. O, Majestic Winter is a band in not really familiar with, but I'll look into them.

w/ Abated Mass of Flesh

Deathcrusher (2014)

Abhorrent Postmortal Vissicity (2015)

Descended Upon the Deceased (2016)

TBA (2016)

4. Jason Wisdom (Becoming the Archetype, Solamors, Death Therapy)

Jason Wisdom started playing Bass around 2004. He stated that he didn't really know how to play the bass but has since learned. Which is very clear with his new project, Death Therapy, which consists of him on Vocals and Bass, and two other session members on Drums and Keyboards.

w/ Becoming the Archetype/The Remnant

The Remnant (2003)

Terminate Damnation (2005)

The Physics of Fire (2007)

Dichotomy (2009)

Celestial Completion (2011)

w/ Solamors

Depravity's Demise (2013)

w/ Death Therapy

Demo (2015)

3. Shane Wibblesman (Every Knee Shall Bow)

Shane Wibblesman started his musical career with his and his brothers' band, Every Knee Shall Bow in 2008. Shane is a amazing bass player! I was able to see him live with the rest of the band at AudioFeed Fest 2016. His Bass solo was awesome! EKSB has new music currently being recorded.

w/ Every Knee Shall Bow

Weary Warriors (2012)

Slayers of Eden (2013)

2. Arthur Green (Living Sacrifice, Eso-Charis)

Arthur Green started music back in 1995 with his band Elliot who recorded a demo titled The Plateau Green. Elliot changed their name to Eso-Charis in 1997. They recorded their debut self titled album in 1998 and a 7" in 2000, titled Setting Roots for Winter. Green and Matt Putman left the band in 1999 to join Living Sacrifice who recorded two albums before LS broke up. LS reunited in 2008, with same lineup, minus Putman. They have since recorded an EP, and two albums. The band is currently still working on a new album.

w/ Eso-Charis

The Plateau Green (1996)

Eso-Charis (1998)

Setting Roots for Winter (2000)

w/ Living Sacrifice

The Hammering Process (2000)

Subtle Alliance (2002)

Conceived in Fire (2002)

Death Machine (2008)

The Infinite Order (2010)

Ghost Thief (2013)

1. Steven Dail (Project 86, Innermeans)

Steven Dail is the best Bass player I've ever heard in heavy music! He played bass for Project 86 from 1997-2010 on all the records up until Wait for the Siren. He has the thickest Bass sound I've ever heard and he is the reason I want to learn Bass!

w/ Innermeans

Innermeans (1997)

w/ Project 86

Project 86 (1998)

Drawing Black Lines (1999)

Truthless Heroes (2001)

Songs to Burn Brides By (2003)

...And the Rest Will Follow (2005)

Rival Factions (2007)

Picket Fence Cartel (2009)

So this is the list! Once again, just my opinion! Other great bassists would be Omar Domkus of Scaterd Few, Jeff Bowie of Soul Embraced, Ezekiel Vasquez of Islander and Jon Dunn of Demon Hunter (and Soul Embraced). Go look all these guys up! These segments will continue, most likely with Rhythm Guitarists next! Maybe Leads. Guess you'll find out.....

Signed
